Safe spaces are pretty similar to spaces for minors. There are sensitive individuals there who have a bad reaction when exposed to certain types of content.
If you think these individuals are oversensitive, that's because they are. They literally can't cope because they're vulnerable in the same way that a child is vulnerable. That's why the moderators of certain instances have taken it upon themselves to defend them.
There are two schools of child-raising:
1. Shelter your kids.
2. Toughen them up.
There are degrees in between of course, but this whole free speech debacle we've been having online essentially comes down to this, put pointedly:
Do we want a world of idealist socialist sissies or a world of pragmatist fascist bullies?
I'd argue that this is actually one of the big questions of our time. This is more or less what we're at war with Russia over. Putin is a traditionalist who thinks we've lost our bloody minds here in the West.
I have some personal experience with both places and I stand with a leg in both of them, because there are pros and cons to both. I can't really see how one or the other alone would be good for the world. There are no simple answers here.
