Interesting discovery this morning. Bible Project putting out bangers as per usual. The monarchy in Israel finds its roots in the idolatry of the Golden Calf. The story of Israel wanting a King and the appointment of Saul uses all the same kind of language that is used to describe the making of the Golden Calf. Which means that the entire origin story of the Israeli Monarchy is rooted in idolatry. “We want a King that can go before us that can fight our battles for us.” In the wilderness, it was God that directly went before Israel and fought their battles for them. This is directly challenging the idolatry of the governing authorities; past, present, future; and their abilities to solve our problems for us. That is a space where God wants to be in. God is literally telling Israel not to look to a king to fight their battles/ solve their problems and instead to trust Him. This is also a misplacement of trust. Government should not be trusted or relied on to solve our problems. That space should be filled by God. Which then echos Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:25 when he preaches on anxiety and how God knows what we need.
