elon musk says he will switch on the first commercial direct-to-cell service (T-Mobile only I think) in a few months. Then many more over several years. Low bandwidth but generally good enough.
Might be worth watching to see how the account and IMEI/SIM details are handled.
I guess local calls might initially be expensive.
